When should you worry about ear pain?
If an ear ache is accompanied by dizziness, a serious headache, swelling around the ear or a dropping of the facial muscles on one side of the face then it may be time to seek medical treatment. A persistent fever of 104ºF (40 ºC) or higher in children is a clear sign that medical attention is necessary.
As we mentioned, in most cases, ear infections tend to clear up on their own within 2-3 days and there's usually no cause for concern. Where ear infections can become worrisome are those that don't clear up after a few days, infections that recur often, and infections that lead to severe pain.
Seek emergency care if you have any of the following symptoms: Pain in an ear with or without fever. Itching of the ear or ear canal. Loss of hearing or difficulty hearing in one or both ears.
In general, if your symptoms don't get better in 48 to 72 hours, contact your health care provider. Middle ear infections can cause long-term problems if not treated. They can lead to: Infection in other parts of the head.
Sharp ear pain commonly results from an infection or a temporary change in air pressure or altitude. In other cases, it may stem from TMD or a foreign object lodged in the ear. The pain, though unpleasant, may be no cause for concern and resolve without treatment.
If you've been noticing sharp, recurring pains in your ears, chances are that your ear has been infected with bacteria. If you feel like ignoring the pain, believing that with time it would go away, don't! Left unchecked, the infection may spread beyond your ear canal to other organs of your body.
Ear infections happen when viruses or bacteria get into the middle ear, the space behind the eardrum. When a child has an ear infection (also called otitis media), the middle ear fills with pus (infected fluid). The pus pushes on the eardrum, which can be very painful.
Most ear infections clear up within 3 days, although sometimes symptoms can last up to a week. If you, or your child, have a high temperature or you do not feel well enough to do your normal activities, try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people until you feel better.
The pain from an ear infection will come on fast, but it doesn't usually last longer than a day or two. But if your pain lingers without improving for several days, you should head over to the doctor.
Earaches can happen without an infection. They can occur when air and fluid build up behind the eardrum. They may cause a feeling of fullness and discomfort. They may also impair hearing.
